May 2024 Auction Collaboration Recap
Hello all!
During the May auction, myself and Kaitlynn from Milly's Place found a baby donkey with a severe leg deformity and her mama as well as a grey percheron cross mare with severe melanoma lesions on her anus, vulva, eyelid, and mouth. We collaborated and coordinated with a well reputed organization in Spring, Texas called Freedom Reins, who enthusiasitcally stepped up to sanctuary all three as well as ensure the appropriate treatments were provided.
Christina at Freedom Reins has been a wonderful steward for our trio. WilsonHaus has assised with fundraising efforts. At the bottom of the blog are screenshots of our assistance, as you all know - I am a big proponent of transparency.
As of 6/20/24
MAMA AND BABY DONKEY:
Mama and baby donkey are currently hospitalized at Texas A&M and are in the care of one of the best ortho teams.
1. Baby has had a surgery on her pastern joint to clean out the gnarly infection that was eating away at the integrity of the joint. She has also been receiving joint lavages, antibiotic impregnated beads to pack the joint, frequent bandage change and supportive care. This has been a costly but necessary surgery to save not only baby's leg but ultimately her life. Whilst in the hospital, baby managed to scratch her cornea and has been receiving treatment for this as well as began to develop a respiratory infection - believed to be from exposure while at the sale barn. She has received treatment for this as well - adding to the costs of their hospital stay.
2. Mom began showing symptoms of respiratory distress while at the sale barn. She had diagnostics done at the hospital and was diagnosed with Influenza A. She has been receiving supporting care and nebulizer treatments.
Mom and baby will be at the hospital for the foreseeable future as baby donkey continues her rehabilitation.
GREY MARE
The grey mare rescued has been assessed by a vet and confirmed to have cancer. Melanoma is slow growing but invasive and if left untreated will eventually block her intestinal tract. She has a plethora of tumors on her vulva and anus which will need to be removed surgically.
The surgery will require her to be hospitalized for estimated 3 to 4 weeks.
She will also have a lesion removed that is growing on her third eyelid.
The cancer in her mouth is more difficult to treat, but there is a chemo injection that has been recommended as a possibly option, but is a costly treatment.
Her surgery and chemo is estimated to cost 11,000 dollars. This is not including the cost of her initial rescue, transport or initial assessments by the vet.
Her surgery is scheduled June 20
RESCUE
We all knew that rescuing these vulnerable three would be a commitment. We understood the complexity of the care they would require and the financial toll that this would take. We also all know how incredible our collaborative and collective communities are and that we will be able to provide them with the best chances for the best outcomes.
The real work of rescue starts once you usher them into your stewardship. Rescue is the after - the work, the advocacy and the promises kept.
We made a promise to them to do all we can, and that is what we are prepared to do. We hope you will join us in their rehabilitation and sanctuary journey.
